Offseason Analysis for Commanders: Offensive Line

Published

on

The Washington Commanders have been active during this offseason, but the rest of the NFL community only fully engaged in the process last week. With the NFL Scouting Combine approaching, teams, including the Commanders, are converging on Indianapolis, Indiana, traditionally signaling the onset of intensified efforts for those looking to make strategic moves.

As the frenzy approaches, Washington, possibly one of the proactive teams, is assessing its current offensive line situation. Presently, only nine offensive linemen are under contract for 2024, necessitating additions. The focus is on bolstering the group, preferably at higher positions rather than lower ones, considering upgrades are sought for every position except Cosmi’s.

In terms of specific positions, the Centers comprise Nick Gates and Ricky Stromberg. With Akingbulu being an exclusive rights free agent, Washington has the authority to bring him back. Other linemen have different contractual situations, including Brooks, who declined a futures contract offer, and is reportedly contemplating a return to the Commanders.

Currently, Washington ranks 22nd in the NFL in offensive line spending for 2024, allocating $37.8 million to the group. While some critique the franchise’s financial commitment to the unit, it’s essential to recognize that in 2023, both the highest and lowest offensive payrolls won their respective divisions. This highlights that funding alone doesn’t necessarily correlate with quality play.

It’s noteworthy that the Tampa Bay BuccaneersTampa Bay Buccaneers, with the lowest offensive line spending in 2023, won their division, emphasizing that success isn’t solely determined by financial investment. Conversely, the Detroit Lions, the highest-spending team on the offensive line last season, also won their division.
