The Washington Commanders face a defensive challenge this offseason as key players, including Kendall Fuller and Kamren Curl, head to free agency, attracting interest from multiple teams. With over $70 million in cap space, the Commanders aim to be aggressive in free agency to bolster their roster. While there’s a possibility of re-signing Curl and Fuller, teams like the New York Jets could express interest, offering a competitive edge for the 2024 season. The Jets, in particular, are considering Curl as a potential replacement for Jordan Whitehead, who is set to hit free agency.

ESPN’s Matt Bowen ranks Curl at No. 36 among the top 50 free agents, highlighting his instinctive safety skills that align well with Robert Saleh’s defensive system. Despite a recent lack of interceptions, Curl’s reliability and adaptability to the Jets’ defensive schemes make him a valuable prospect. In the 2023 season, Curl allowed 373 yards in 16 games, showcasing his ability to fulfill his role alongside cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed.

While Curl may not be the most hyped free agent, he is regarded as a player being overlooked by some, with potential to benefit multiple teams. Jarrett Bailey of Touchdown Wire emphasizes Curl’s previous success, noting that his 2022 season was highly graded by PFF. Bailey suggests that Curl’s performance in 2023 might have been overshadowed by the overall struggles of the Commanders’ defense.

If the Jets secure Curl, he would potentially replace Jordan Whitehead, who allowed 280 yards on 38 targets with four interceptions in the previous season. The addition of defensive talent becomes crucial for the Commanders, especially with Dan Quinn taking over as the head coach.

While re-signing Curl and Fuller remains a priority for the Commanders, they may also explore drafting defensive pieces to improve a unit that allowed the most passing yards per game in the league during the last season. Balancing youth and cost considerations, retaining proven talent like Curl and Fuller could play a vital role in enhancing the Commanders’ defense for the upcoming season.
