Despite the decision to place the franchise tag, there are rumors circulating in the NFL suggesting that the Cincinnati Bengals could still secure a substantial return in a trade involving Tee Higgins.
The upcoming four months will play a crucial role in determining Tee Higgins’ future in the NFL. The Cincinnati Bengals have officially placed the franchise tag on Higgins, signaling his connection to the team for at least another season.
The Bengals have until July 15 to negotiate a contract extension with Higgins. In the absence of an extension, Higgins is set to receive over $21.8 million in 2024. While both parties have expressed interest in continuing their collaboration, potential financial constraints, including Joe Burrow’s record extension in 2025 and Ja’Marr Chase’s anticipated significant deal, may pose challenges in retaining Higgins. Given that he is likely to demand top-tier receiver compensation, the Bengals could find it challenging to accommodate his contract expectations.
Amidst these considerations, there is speculation about a possible trade involving Higgins before the July deadline. Teams interested in acquiring him would presumably plan a contract extension. NFL analyst Ari Meirov has outlined two scenarios, neither of which involves a long-term deal for Higgins with the Bengals.
Drawing parallels to the approach taken with safety Jessie Bates in 2022, the Bengals could allow Higgins to play out the season on the franchise tag and subsequently enter free agency. Alternatively, the more advantageous option for the Bengals would be to seek a trade partner for Higgins during the current offseason, especially if they believe meeting his contract demands would be challenging.
The offseason poses numerous uncertainties for Tee Higgins, particularly following an injury-affected 2023 season. It may be in his best interest to focus on both mental and physical recovery, allowing his agent to engage in discussions with the Bengals regarding future plans.
