In a notable development, Ben Standig of The Athletic released a mock draft that is bound to spark discussion among Green Bay Packers fans. Rather than predicting a selection for the Packers at their original 25th overall pick, Standig suggests that Green Bay will make a bold move by trading up to the 12th overall pick, currently held by the Denver Broncos. This maneuver would involve the Packers sacrificing four draft picks to secure the higher selection.

According to Ben Standig’s mock draft, the final price tag for the Green Bay Packers to move up to the 12th overall pick would involve giving up their original first-round choice, original second-round choice, original third-round choice, and original seventh-round choice. However, the Packers would still retain the New York Jets’ second-round pick (acquired via the Aaron Rodgers trade) and the Buffalo Bills’ third-round pick (acquired via the Rasul Douglas trade). While this move would secure a higher pick for the Packers, it would certainly diminish the excitement for Day 2 of the draft among Green Bay’s fans.

In this mock draft scenario, the Green Bay Packers moved up to select Quinyon Mitchell, who is considered one of the top cornerbacks in a draft class rich with talent at that position. Mitchell, a standout from Toledo, has earned consecutive First-Team All-MAC honors over the past two seasons and impressed scouts at the Senior Bowl, where he showcased his skills against other top prospects in the 2024 draft class.

At the combine, Mitchell’s impressive physical attributes further solidified his draft stock. Standing at over 6 feet tall and weighing 195 pounds, he blazed through the 40-yard dash with a remarkable time of 4.33 seconds, showcasing his exceptional speed. Additionally, Mitchell recorded a 38-inch vertical leap, demonstrating his explosiveness, which is highly desirable for the cornerback position. Overall, Mitchell’s combination of size, speed, and athleticism make him an enticing prospect for the Packers to target with their bold move up the draft board.

Below is what Standig had to say about the selection:

Another team with 11 draft selections, the Packers move up 13 spots for arguably the best defender in the class. Mitchell dominated the pre-draft cycle after blasting off last season with the Rockets. This addition and free-agent safety Xavier McKinney bolsters a secondary that will face Justin Jefferson, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Allen and Moore twice a season.

In the intro of the article, he claimed that the mock draft “includes direct insight from scouting and coaching sources or assessments blended into the analysis.” Is there buzz around the league connecting the Packers to Mitchell? Is it buzz that the Packers are willing to move up in the draft? One month out from Day 1 in Detroit, we’re left with more questions than answers here.
