This week, Boston Celtics majority owner Wyc Grousbeck revealed his unexpected involvement in the Milwaukee Bucks’ recent hiring of Doc Rivers. Grousbeck shared on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show” that the Bucks had contacted him for a reference about Rivers before finalizing their decision to appoint him as their midseason coaching replacement for Adrian Griffin.

During the interview, Grousbeck expressed his admiration for Rivers and disclosed the positive reference he provided for the former Celtics coach. He emphasized Rivers’ crucial role in leading the Celtics to the 2008 NBA title, stating, “I love Doc. I got a reference call on Doc from the Bucks. Truthfully, I made a truthful statement, of course. I said we would not have won it in 2008 without Doc. He took that team, molded it together and led the way. He had a ton to do with the championship, and he’s always going to be a very special friend of mine.”

While it might seem unconventional for a team owner to assist a rival organization in hiring a coach, Grousbeck’s willingness to provide a positive recommendation for Rivers reflects the strong relationship between the two and Rivers’ significant impact during his time with the Celtics.

The article also notes that the Bucks and Celtics are major contenders in the Eastern Conference, making it a bold move for the Bucks to seek advice from a top rival. Despite Rivers not being associated with the Celtics since the 2012-13 season, Grousbeck’s endorsement highlights the lasting respect and friendship between them.

However, it’s mentioned that Rivers’ coaching reputation has faced challenges in recent years, particularly due to a less-than-ideal playoff track record. The Bucks, since Rivers took over in late January, have struggled with a 3-7 record in their first 10 games under his coaching, and Rivers has already been vocal about addressing issues within the team.
