Los Angeles Lakers
Brian Windhorst changed his stance in an intriguing way regarding LeBron James’ future with the Lakers.
ESPN reporter and noted LeBron James expert Brian Windhorst has recently adjusted his perspective on the Los Angeles Lakers star’s plans for the upcoming offseason.
In a previous episode of his podcast “The Hoop Collective,” Windhorst expressed uncertainty about James returning to the Lakers. Although he ruled out the possibility of James retiring next season, Windhorst admitted to not knowing if the four-time MVP would continue his career in the purple and gold.
However, in a recent appearance on “First Take,” Windhorst displayed a more confident outlook. He not only believes that James will remain with the Lakers but also threw out potential contract figures. According to Windhorst, LeBron is aiming to sign a lucrative multi-year deal in the offseason, surpassing the magnitude of his current contract.
During the “First Take” segment, Windhorst mentioned the possibility of James signing a nine-figure deal, even surpassing his current agreement. Despite speculating on a potential $60 million-per-year deal for up to three years, Windhorst acknowledged that there’s no guarantee James wouldn’t retire before the contract concludes.
LeBron James has a history of signing short-term deals with player options, allowing him to maintain control over his future. However, with retirement looming as his next major decision, signing a more extended contract wouldn’t necessarily compromise James’ ability to dictate his own fate.
As of now, LeBron is in the first year of a 2-year, $97.1 million extension with the Lakers, signed in 2022. The 39-year-old holds a $51.4 million player option for the next season, which he is likely to decline, barring any unforeseen injuries.
