JJ Watt, the former Houston Texans defensive end, has advocated for a rule change in the NFL to address what he sees as a lack of offensive holding calls. In an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Watt expressed frustration, particularly from a pass rusher’s perspective, regarding the perceived scarcity of holding penalties. He suggested that reducing the penalty for offensive holding from 10 yards to 5 yards could lead to more accurate and fair calling by referees.

Watt believes that referees may be more inclined to enforce the rule if the penalty is less severe, ultimately resulting in a reduction of holding infractions. However, it remains uncertain whether such a rule change would yield the desired outcome as per Watt’s perspective.
