The unexpected trade of Stefon Diggs from the Buffalo Bills to the Houston Texans on Wednesday left NFL fans puzzled and scratching their heads.
The Bills’ decision to trade Stefon Diggs, along with a 2024 sixth-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick, in return for a 2025 second-round pick originally held by the Minnesota Vikings, has raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike. This trade may appear to be an underwhelming return for Buffalo, considering Diggs’ significant impact as Josh Allen’s primary target in the Bills’ offense, evidenced by his impressive four consecutive seasons of 100-plus receptions with the team.
Despite the perception that this move contradicts the win-now approach typically associated with teams contending for championships, Bills general manager Brandon Beane has countered such notions.
“Making moves like these is never easy—they’re very challenging and not made hastily or overnight. However, whenever we make a decision like this, it’s because we’re focused on winning,” Beane stated to reporters, as reported by NFL.com’s Nick Shook. “Sometimes that may not be immediately apparent to everyone. Let me be clear: this is not the Bills giving up or taking a step back. Everything we do is with the goal of winning, and that remains unchanged. It’s only April 3rd, and we’ll continue to fine-tune our roster to ensure we’re prepared to compete come September.”

Beane disclosed that there had been previous opportunities to trade Diggs, despite his exceptional performance, due to some challenges he posed within the organization. However, Beane held off until a few weeks before the NFL draft, believing that the timing was right for both teams.

Given this move, it’s likely that the Bills will focus on selecting a wide receiver in the draft, especially considering the rave reviews about the depth at this position in this year’s class.
“There’s no denying that trading Diggs represents a step back in the short term,” Beane acknowledged, as reported by Shook. “I mean, are we better today? Probably not. It’s a work in progress, and we’re going to continue to work on that. I just hope people know I’m competitive as hell, and I ain’t giving in. We’re going to work through this and continue to look, and I’m confident in the guys on the roster and the staff we have upstairs that helps me. We’ll continue to find pieces to add, and we’ll be ready to roll when it comes time in September.”
