NFL Insider Provides Insights on Eric Bieniemy’s Appointment as UCLA’s Offensive Coordinator
UCLA is currently experiencing significant transformations under the leadership of their new, player-friendly head coach, DeShaun Foster. This shift coincides with the university’s move to the Big-10 conference. A noteworthy addition to Foster’s coaching staff is Eric Bieniemy, a former assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, as well as a Super Bowl winner.
Bieniemy’s transition from his prominent role as Patrick Mahomes’ offensive coordinator with the Chiefs to the Commanders was accompanied by media speculation that his impact on the Chiefs’ success had been exaggerated. Reports also surfaced about his coaching style, described as refreshingly old-school but potentially causing friction with some players. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated shed light on the factors influencing Bieniemy’s decision to join UCLA, emphasizing that questions about his coaching approach had arisen during his time with the Commanders.
According to Breer, Bieniemy maintained a consistent coaching style, treating all players equally and demanding high standards from everyone. There were observations of his stubbornness in implementing Andy Reid’s offense, particularly emphasizing tight ends, during his tenure with the Commanders.
Looking ahead to UCLA’s offense in 2024, one clear implication is the potential increased utilization of tight ends. However, the unknown factor remains how the Bruin team will respond to Bieniemy’s reported coaching style. It’s suggested that his approach, which might have encountered challenges in the professional ranks, could find a better fit in the college environment, where players are more impressionable and adaptable.
Bieniemy’s previous reluctance to extensively explain the “why” behind his schemes may have been a point of contention, especially as players increasingly desire understanding. The college coaching dynamic, being more receptive to straightforward instructions, may align better with Bieniemy’s coaching philosophy. The success of this coaching duo, Foster and Bieniemy, ultimately hinges on recruiting players who embrace the evolving culture they are instilling—a culture shaped by their shared background as former NFL running backs.
