Former Browns quarterback Frank Ryan passed away at 87 years old, as confirmed by his family on New Year’s Day. He had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for a part of his life.

Ryan joined the Cleveland team in 1962 and played for seven years. Initially serving as a backup to Jim Ninowski, he became the starting quarterback following Ninowski’s injury during the 1962 season. Ryan led the Browns to a successful 1963 season, throwing for 2,026 yards and 25 touchdowns, resulting in a 10-4 record. In 1964, he guided the Browns to their fourth NFL championship by defeating the Baltimore Colts 27-0.

During his tenure, Ryan achieved a 52-22 record, throwing for 13,361 yards, 134 touchdowns, and 88 interceptions. Notably, he was the last quarterback to lead the Browns to an NFL title in 1964. He was also a three-time Pro Bowler from 1964 to 1966 and led the league in passing touchdowns in 1964.

Ryan’s family released a statement, acknowledging his passing due to Alzheimer’s disease, possibly exacerbated by chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Beyond his football career, Ryan earned a PhD in Mathematics from Rice University in 1965. He held various positions after retiring from football, including Director of House Information Systems for the United States House of Representatives and Athletic Director at Yale University.

Throughout his life, Ryan emphasized academic achievement and cautioned against the risks of football-related injuries. He donated his brain to the Boston University CTE Center for research purposes. Ryan cherished his fans and fulfilled numerous autograph requests until his physical limitations prevented him from doing so.

Ryan enjoyed a long and loving marriage with his wife Joan, celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary earlier in the year. He leaves behind a large and devoted family who brought him immense joy and comfort throughout his life.
