The Buffalo Bills have officially signed defensive tackle Austin Johnson to a one-year contract, as confirmed by the team on Thursday.

Drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2016, Johnson notably started 17 games for the Los Angeles Chargers last season, his second with the team, tallying 46 total tackles and forcing a fumble.

Head coach Sean McDermott expressed admiration for Johnson’s character and professionalism, highlighting his reputation as a desirable teammate. Although McDermott missed the opportunity to meet Johnson during his visit to the facility, he looks forward to their collaboration.

Johnson’s signing reunites him with former Penn State and Titans teammate DaQuan Jones, who expressed enthusiasm about Johnson’s arrival. Known for versatility, Johnson, a former second-round pick, has accumulated eight career sacks and has experience playing both inside and outside on the defensive line.

General manager Brandon Beane sees potential for Johnson to mirror Jones’s successful adaptation to the Bills’ system, particularly in enhancing his pass-rushing skills. Beane praised Johnson’s character and noted his desire to be part of a winning culture, with Jones playing a role in advocating for Buffalo.

Raised in New Jersey, Johnson previously played alongside Bills defensive tackle DaQuan Jones at Penn State, establishing a familiarity between the two.
