The disclosed rationale behind Blake Griffin’s decision to not make a comeback to the NBA.
Blake Griffin, once an electrifying player in the NBA, concluded his basketball career without much fanfare, and the reasons for his decision are now becoming clearer. According to a report by Brian Robb from MassLive, multiple Boston Celtics players made efforts to persuade Griffin to return to the team throughout the season, with contact initiated during their West Coast trip in December and continued in recent weeks.
Despite the Celtics’ interest, Griffin, who remained unsigned during the offseason, has consistently rejected their proposals. Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla addressed the situation, revealing that Griffin declined the offers due to his desire to prioritize spending more time with his family. Mazzulla emphasized Griffin’s commitment to family, stating that he stopped discussing the matter with him after learning about his family’s importance.
Although the six-time All-Star, who served as a reserve in 41 games for the Celtics last season, is only 34 years old, he has grappled with numerous lower-body injuries and surgeries over the past decade and a half. Given the toll on his physical condition, participating in the NBA season may not have seemed worthwhile for Griffin, especially with the likelihood of taking on a more symbolic role rather than a significant on-court presence. Despite being highly regarded by the Celtics, who are favorites for the NBA title, Griffin seems to have prioritized his family over pursuing another championship. Despite the potential opportunity to win his first NBA title with the Celtics, Griffin, having earned over $255 million in career salary and involved in various off-court pursuits, appears to have chosen to focus on his larger life priorities.
