WASHINGTON COMMANDERS
The Washington Commanders have been identified as the most suitable choice for USC quarterback Caleb Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The Washington Commanders hold the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, secured after a challenging 2023 season with a 4-13 record. This high draft position provides the Commanders with significant flexibility, particularly in addressing their primary need for a quarterback.
Despite being a fifth-round pick in 2022, Sam Howell’s future with the team appeared promising for a time. However, the 2023 season saw him lead the NFL in interceptions with 21, while managing only 21 touchdown passes. Additionally, he faced the highest number of sacks among all quarterbacks in the league, totaling 65.
The 2024 NFL Draft features a notable quarterback class, including Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., Bo Nix, and JJ McCarthy. While Williams is expected to be the first overall pick to the Chicago Bears, the Commanders could consider selecting Maye or Daniels, or explore trading back to pick from the remaining quarterbacks in the middle of the first round.
Contrary to this, a recent Bleacher Report article suggests that Washington is the ideal fit for Williams. The connection is attributed to the newly appointed Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and Williams’ time at USC last year. Bringing the native of Bowie, Maryland, back home is considered a potential priority for the revamped Washington organization.
Williams, a highly recruited prospect from Gonzaga College High School, located just a few miles away from the White House, has childhood and football ties to the area, making it a compelling talking point. On the football side, he is seen as the potential answer to Washington’s longstanding quest for a franchise quarterback, reminiscent of the acquisition of Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III in 2012.
In terms of offensive weapons, Washington boasts a trio that could provide both Kingsbury and Williams with diverse options to exploit opposing defenses, including wide receiver Terry McLaurin.
