Cincinnati Bengals
Two ex-Bengals tight ends poised for free agency: Is it possible for either to return to Cincinnati?
The Cincinnati Bengals currently have no tight ends under contract for 2024, having signed Drew Sample, Tanner Hudson, and Irv Smith Jr. to short-term deals. With a mixed performance from this trio, the team seems poised for a potential overhaul of the tight end position.
Interestingly, the Bengals may have an opportunity to address their tight end needs with two recent success stories hitting the free-agent market. Both Hayden Hurst, released by the Carolina Panthers, and CJ Uzomah, released by the New York Jets, were key contributors during the Bengals’ recent deep playoff runs alongside Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd.
Hurst, who had a productive season with Cincinnati in 2022, faced setbacks with the Panthers due to a serious concussion, potentially jeopardizing his career. Uzomah, a vocal leader during the Bengals’ 2021 run, left the team and has since had a less impressive stint with the Jets.
While Hurst’s career may be at risk due to the concussion, Uzomah could be seen as a luxury signing for the Bengals. Acquiring a proven starter familiar with the quarterback and skill position players is a rare opportunity, especially considering that Zac Taylor’s offense remains intact despite Brian Callahan’s departure for the Tennessee Titans. Although Hurst has injury concerns, he has been cleared to return, while Uzomah is likely eager to prove he can replicate his 2021 performance, distancing himself from his time with Zach Wilson and the Jets.
